Cancellation survey questions that actually save customers

49 question phrasings and save-offer scripts, grouped by the reason people cancel. Click copy, paste into your flow. No account required.

Price

They think the product costs more than the value they get. Your job is to reframe value, not race to the bottom.

Survey questions

  • What's the main reason you're thinking about cancelling?
  • Is the price the biggest factor in your decision?
  • If we could make the price work for your budget, would you stay?
  • What would you need to pay per month for this to feel fair?
  • Are you comparing us to a cheaper alternative, or is it purely about your own budget right now?
  • Would a pause or downgrade be more useful than cancelling outright?
  • Is there a specific feature you feel you are not getting enough value from for what you pay?

Save-offer scripts

  • We can offer you 25% off for the next 3 months while you rebuild usage — no code changes on your end, just click accept and your next invoice reflects it.
  • Switch to our annual plan and save 20%: same product, one payment, and you lock in today's price before our next increase.
  • If budget is tight this quarter, pause your subscription for 30 days. Your data stays intact and billing resumes when you are ready.

When this backfires: A blanket discount trains price-sensitive customers to click cancel every renewal. Pair it with a usage check or annual commitment.

Missing features

They want something you do not ship yet. Show them the roadmap, offer a workaround, or be honest about fit.

Survey questions

  • What feature were you hoping we had?
  • Is there one missing capability that would change your mind about staying?
  • How are you solving this problem today without us?
  • Would a beta seat on the feature we are building next month be enough to keep you?
  • Is this a nice-to-have or a blocker for your day-to-day work?
  • Did you check our integrations page, or is the gap something we genuinely do not support?
  • If we shipped this in the next 60 days, would you reconsider cancelling?

Save-offer scripts

  • Join our early-access list for [feature name] — you keep your current plan at today's price and get the beta the week it ships.
  • Our team can set up a workaround using [integration / export / API] that covers 80% of what you need until the native feature lands.
  • Book a 20-minute call with product: tell us exactly what you need and we will confirm whether it is on the roadmap and when.

When this backfires: Promising a feature date you cannot hit destroys trust faster than losing the customer. Offer beta access or a call, not a deadline.

Competitor switch

They are leaving for someone else. Find out what pulled them — price, a single feature, or sales pressure — and counter with specifics.

Survey questions

  • Which product are you moving to?
  • What does the other tool do better for your situation?
  • Is there anything about us you would miss if you switched?
  • Did their pricing or a limited-time offer tip the decision?
  • How far along are you in the migration — still evaluating, or already signed up?
  • Was there a specific moment that made you start looking elsewhere?
  • If we matched one thing they do, would you stay, or is this a full platform change?

Save-offer scripts

  • Stay through your renewal and we will migrate your data to the export format [competitor] expects — free, handled by our team, done in 48 hours.
  • We will extend your plan 60 days at no charge so you can run both tools side by side and compare real usage, not a sales demo.
  • Let us show you what [specific capability] looks like in our product — most teams switching for that feature have not seen our latest release.

When this backfires: Trash-talking the competitor makes you look defensive. Ask what they do better, then answer with evidence, not insults.

Low usage

They are paying for something they barely touch. Help them find a reason to log in, or downgrade without shame.

Survey questions

  • How often have you logged in over the past month?
  • Is low usage because of your schedule, or because the product never clicked?
  • What would need to happen for you to use this weekly?
  • Did you finish setting up the parts of the product you originally bought it for?
  • Would a lighter plan that matches how you actually use us make more sense?
  • Is there a teammate who should be the primary user instead of you?
  • If we walked you through one workflow that saves an hour a week, would that change things?

Save-offer scripts

  • Book a free 15-minute activation call — we will set up the one workflow you bought this for and send you a loom of exactly what to click.
  • Downgrade to our Starter tier at half the price: same account, fewer seats, no penalty for coming back up later.
  • We will pause billing for 60 days and send you three short emails showing the features most customers wish they had found sooner.

When this backfires: A discount on a product someone does not use just postpones the cancellation. Fix activation first, price second.

Onboarding failure

They never got past setup. This is often the highest-ROI save — the problem is confusion, not fit.

Survey questions

  • Did you get stuck during setup, or did you finish onboarding and then stop?
  • What was the last step you completed before things stalled?
  • Was anything unclear in our docs or onboarding emails?
  • Did you expect the product to work differently out of the box?
  • Would a live walkthrough with our team get you over the hump?
  • Is there a specific integration or import that blocked you?
  • If we fixed the one thing that confused you, would you give it another two weeks?

Save-offer scripts

  • Our onboarding team will join a screenshare this week, finish your setup with you, and stay on the call until your first real task is done.
  • We will import your data from [CSV / competitor / API] at no charge — send us the file and we handle the rest within one business day.
  • Take an extra 30 days free while you complete setup. Billing starts only after you mark onboarding complete or hit your first milestone.

When this backfires: Offering more docs to someone who already could not follow the docs adds insult. Offer a human, not a link.

Business change

Their company changed — layoffs, pivot, acquisition, project ended. Empathize first; a graceful exit builds goodwill.

Survey questions

  • Has something changed on your side — team size, budget, or priorities?
  • Is this a temporary pause or a permanent shutdown of the project that used us?
  • Would it help to transfer the account to a colleague who is taking over?
  • Are you winding down entirely, or just this one use case?
  • If your situation changes in six months, would you want an easy way to come back?
  • Is there anything we could do to support the transition — exports, documentation for your replacement tool?
  • Would pausing instead of cancelling keep your data ready for when the project restarts?

Save-offer scripts

  • Pause your account for up to 6 months at no charge. Your workspace, data, and settings stay exactly as you left them.
  • We will export everything to a portable format and send a clean handoff doc — free, no questions asked, delivered within 24 hours.
  • Transfer the subscription to a teammate at 50% off for 3 months so the project can continue under new ownership.

When this backfires: Hard-selling someone who just laid off half their team feels predatory. Offer a pause or clean exit; they may return or refer you.

Freeform closers

Open-ended prompts for the end of the flow. Use one after they pick a reason, or alone when nothing else fits.

Survey questions

  • Before you go — is there anything we could have done differently?
  • In your own words, what made you decide to leave today?
  • Is there one thing that would have kept you as a customer?
  • What will you use instead of us, if anything?
  • How likely are you to recommend us to a colleague, even though you are leaving? (0–10)
  • Any feedback for the team that builds this product?
  • If we reach out in three months, should we?

Save-offer scripts

  • Thanks for the honesty. If anything changes, reply to your cancellation email — we keep your feedback on file and your account reopens in one click.
  • We read every answer. If your suggestion ships, we will email you first — no subscription required to get the update.
  • Your account stays active for 7 more days so you can export anything you need. After that, we delete your data per our privacy policy.

When this backfires: A long freeform field at the start of the flow increases abandonment. Put open-ended questions after they have committed to cancelling.

These 49 questions cover the seven reasons most SaaS customers cancel. RetainFast lets you attach a different offer to each reason — so price objections get a discount and onboarding failures get a setup call, automatically.
